GRI INDEX 2014

Energy

Crucial: Impact 4 - Relevance 4

Beter Bed Holding wishes to address the issue of energy use in a sensible way. This means that energy-efficient alternatives will be applied if the investment in these alternatives is justified by the reduction in energy use.

G4-EN3
Energy consumption.

Energy consumption within the organisation (in terajoule).

The main energy sources are electricity and natural gas, with consumption of 111 (2013: 114) and 102 (2013: 133) terajoule respectively.

Energy consumption (TJ):

ELECTRICITY

Electricity consumption has been trending down for many years due to numerous energy-saving measures. Consumption totalled 30,800 megawatt hours (MWh), which represents 90% of the 34,200 MWh consumed in 2010.

Relative electricity consumption per m2 is an important key figure which is reported below in indicator EN5.

NATURAL GAS

Another major source of energy is the natural gas that is used to heat offices and stores. It has become clear in the past few years that natural gas consumption depends mainly on the winter weather. As it was relatively warm in 2014, gas consumption decreased to 3.2 million m3, which represents 91% of consumption in 2010.

G4-EN6
Reduction of Energy consumption.

Reduction of energy consumption achieved as a direct result of conservation and efficiency initiatives.

Beter Bed Holding does not measure the direct impacts of savings projects or the investments in energy-efficient equipment. Proposals have been put forward within the organisation since 2012 to improve CSR performance. Some of the improvements proposed and implemented that support savings in terms of the energy requirement are:

  • deploying energy meters to take location-specific measures;

  • using led-lighting in illimunated advertising signs at stores;

  • the acquisition of new trucks based on the highest Euro standard (Euro6).

  • G4-EN7
    Reductions in energy requirements of products and services.

    Beter Bed Holding does not produce any goods that consume energy.
